The current internet is putting pressure on the freedom, privacy, and online rights of all citizens worldwide. This calls for a new strategy to regain our digital sovereignty. What is the responsibility of the current design world in this regard; what attitude does this require of a contemporary designer? And what role does education play in this?
Marleen Stikker (1962) is the founder and director of Waag. As ‘mayor’ of De Digitale Stad (The Digital City), Marleen Stikker developed the first free gateway to the internet and virtual community in Europe in 1994. In 1994, she also started Waag, a research institute for creative technology and social innovation. Waag has been operating at the intersection of art, science, and technology for 25 years. It explores the social and cultural impact of new technologies based on the values of openness, fairness, and inclusiveness.
