'FIGURE IT OUT!'
On the struggle to be seen and the design power of hip hop
Building an art institution from the ground up means constantly hustling and bustling. That much has become clear to Marian Duff (46), founder and director of the Open Space Contemporary Art Museum in Amsterdam Zuidoost. Since opening as a pop-up museum during the celebration of 50 years of Bijlmer in 2017, OSCAM has provided a platform for young visual artists, curators, photographers, designers, programmers, and so on. Many of these creators have roots in the Caribbean or the African diaspora. One annual exhibition is BOUT IT, which focuses on hip-hop music and culture. Previous editions have led to special collaborations between hip-hop artists from Europe and Africa. Bout It #3 and #4 focused on women in hip-hop.
After more than twenty-five years of fighting to be seen in the world of fashion, design, and visual arts, Marian Duff now wants to reflect on where it all began: in café De Duivel in Amsterdam's Reguliersdwarsstraat. In the first quarter of 2024, OSCAM will dedicate an exhibition to this hip-hop embassy, which has been a spontaneous breeding ground and open stage for like-minded spirits since the nineties. A few names: Daniel Eeuwens (owner of café De Duivel), Edson Sabajo, Karin Amatmoekrim, Ebru Baskan, and Andreas Urhahn. Don't these names ring a bell? Find out for yourself or let Marian Duff surprise you with a sneak preview of the exhibition at the Wim Crouwel Lecture.
